For such a span, one inevitably relied on existing studies – with the proverbial ‘rude shock’ the result. The scorecard of published material 37 Archives and Societal Provenance is patchy – the broad outline is there but much of the detail is lacking: we have a reasonable idea where we came from, and that is uncritically accepted and repeated.
