Wintour. “Jamie,” a New York City writer, recounted her recent experience of being an intern at one of the top women’s health magazines on the stands today. “The executive editor referred to me as ‘Intern Jamie,’” she said. ” Apparently, there does exist a mean-girl mentality at the top of some women’s magazines. com. In blog entry after blog entry, this anon-o-writer called out the insidious incidents that took place behind the scenes at various magazines and the women who dominated them, alleging that clothing labels were checked to make sure subordinates were wearing designer fashions, heels had to be at least four inches high, and editors took three-hour alcohol-filled lunches; interns and assistants were said to perform the kinds of tasks portrayed in the movie (running out to buy something for an editor’s child), and editors were criticized for everything from their freebie beauty-closet goodies to the gaudy clothes they wore and bags they carried.
Whereas WH previously covered one sexual health topic per issue, these articles were now numerous feature pieces splashed throughout the book. With content like “Drop Two Dress Sizes in Two Weeks” (impossible unless you’re stranded on a season of “Survivor”) and “Why Newlyweds Cheat” (inspiring topic for the newly hitched), the magazine began to smack of a former hybrid of itself: health information coupled with Cosmo’s notoriously loose moral code and exaggerated sex and health claims. Then there was Southern Living’s redesign in 2010.
