The hours following the accident were terrible. I will never forget them. It took as long as five hours before help reached us. We had no bandages because the carriage where the first aid supplies were had been shattered and the chemist himself had been killed on the spot. The poor wounded were lying around moaning and asking for a little something to drink – but there was nothing to give them. Mother went into one of the least damaged carriages to try to find a few drops of water. There she found an old general who normally saw to my two eldest brothers’ upbringing.
This was the famous Anna Anderson who convinced many people that she was a member of the Romanov family. Olga did not recognise her though felt deeply sorry for the poor woman. Many years later, DNA tests confirmed Olga’s opinion. It was after the death of her sister – Queen Alexandra of England – that the Dowager Empress lost all zest for life. She passed away on October 13th, 1928, and was laid to rest in Roskilde. In 2006 she was reburied in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg, next to her husband, Alexander III.
This book was sold widely in Scandinavia and led me to believe that it would also be of interest to readers in the English-speaking world. In order to focus on my great-grandmother as a person it was decided to let her tell her own story. This English edition is therefore not merely a translation of the Danish book but is primarily based the Grand Duchess’ handwritten notes. Some of these notes were omitted in the Danish book; they now appear in full in this edition. Whenever the Grand Duchess wrote in English, her notes – which appear in italics in this book – have been literally transcribed under consideration of corrections of spelling errors and minor adjustments made for the sake of clarity.
